Why SEO is vital to Small Business

Blog No Comments

A few years ago there was a series of television ads I really enjoyed about a tradesman who forgot to submit his listing to the yellow pages phone directory. The implications of the ad where straightforward;  any business who didn’t advertise in the directory ran the risk of losing huge amounts of business.

Now, more people use search engines than telephone directories to find access Australian businesses. Not just big business, either, but local trades and services. The internet has been a blessing to consumers, as they can do all the research they like on a business or industry from the comfort  of their own home.

It’s for this very reason that the internet is a blessing for small business, too, because while competition in the phone book is still stiff, less than half of all small businesses have their own website. In plain English, that means a minority of small businesses have a presence in the area where the majority of their prospective clients are.

Even fewer small businesses invest in search engine optimisation, either not fully understanding the concept or thinking SEO is the domain of large corporations only. The fact is, with more potential clients, less competition and professional expertise supporting them, small businesses can access a goldmine of new business by having a focus on the internet in general and SEO in particular.
